The 'Alliance for Marriage' has proposed a federal amendment banning gay marriages in the U.S. The amendment would block the Vermont Civil Unions bill, prohibit similar bills in other states, and threaten domestic partner benefits.
The proposed amendment states:
"Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman."
"Neither this constitution or the constitution of any state, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups."
At its core, this amendment threatens the civil rights of every gay and lesbian person, whether in a committed relationship or not, and whether they have the desire to marry or not. Similar to previous bans on interracial marriages and denying women the right to vote, this amendment is immoral, discriminatory and relegates gays to second-class citizens.

Passage of this amendment would require approval by both chambers of Congress and by legislatures in 38 states -- only 4 more than the 34 states with existing anti-gay marriage laws!
We, the undersigned, are representative of many races, straight/bi/gay/trans, male/female, from across the United States and are from many backgrounds. We believe in the U.S. Constitution, and believe there is no place in it for such hatred. We STAND UNITED AGAINST THE FEDERAL MARRIAGE AMENDMENT!
