Support Cleaner Air in NYC

Just one percent of New York City's buildings, those burning the dirtiest grades of heating oil, produce more pollution than all the city's cars and trucks combined.

These 9,000 buildings burn No. 4 or 6 oil -- some 1,000 tons of it every year -- and it threatens the health of all New Yorkers, creating a rain of toxic soot that aggravates asthma, increases the risk of cancer, exacerbates respiratory illnesses and can cause premature death.

That's why we're highlighting this threat and urging Mayor Bloomberg to support switching to cleaner burning fuels, which can reduce dangerous soot pollution by 95%.

Please take action -- send an email to Mayor Bloomberg supporting a transition to cleaner burning heating fuels.
New Yorkers are exposed to dangerous air pollution from the use of #4 and #6 heating oil in 9,000 buildings throughout the city. These are the dirtiest fuels available and they emit toxic soot that contains heavy metals like nickel. This pollution is known to increase cardiovascular disease and is also linked to asthma, cancer, and premature death.

For the benefit of the health of all New Yorkers, we should transition to cleaner burning natural gas and #2 heating oil. These fuels cut toxic soot pollution by 95% and will improve New Yorkers' health.

I urge you to support a transition to these cleaner burning fuels within the next 10 years.
