Every January, since 2003, more than 100,000 people flock to Hwacheon in South Korea to attend the Mountain Trout Ice-Fishing Festival to kill millions of fish.
Standing on a river with almost 10,000 other people, all with the same purpose of plucking those unfortunate creatures from underwater, doing the aquatic equivalent of shooting ducks in a barrel, is definitely not something you want your children to attend to. However, the festival is hailed as a family-friendly attraction, where children not only witness but actively participate in the mass killing of animals, sometimes in the form of 'barehanded catching' (photo).
To make room for a massive fishing plane that can support thousands of people at one time, the original Hwacheon River has been destroyed and drastically modified beyond recognition. The enormous scale and consumptive nature of the festival creates serious environmental problems.
In fact, this so-called mountain trout (San-cheon-eo: 산천어) has never been there, and has nothing to do with the local aquatic ecosystem. Hence the festival relies on fish farms to supply around 180 tons of fish, reared in about 17 facilities spread out across the country. Long-distance shipping of these fish cause high level of stress, even causing death to some of them.
Now it's on us to use this moment to stop this wasteful mass killing, and call for the local government to completely reform this festival to an ethical, ecological and sustainable event. Sign the petition to voice your opposition to this festival!
매년 1월, 수만명의 사람들이 화천 산천어 축제에서 물고기 죽이기에 참여하고 있습니다.
사실 이 산천어는 지역 토착종이 아니기 때문에 전국 각지의 양식장에서 180여톤의 산천어를 수송해야 합니다. 이 과정에서 동물들은 많은 스트레스를 받고 죽기도 합니다.
수천명 이상의 인원이 일시에 낚시를 하기 위해 정비공사를 거치며, 화천의 본래 하천은 원형을 알아볼 수 없을 만큼 파괴되었습니다. 이 축제의 엄청난 규모와 낭비가 심각한 환경 문제까지 야기하고 있는 것입니다.
그중에서도 우려스러운 점은 이 축제에 가족단위 참여가 많이 이뤄진다는 점입니다. 수백, 수천명의 사람들이 다같이 오로지 유희를 위해 생명체를 좁은 공간에 가두고 함부로 죽이면서 즐기는 행위는 비인도적, 반생명적, 비교육적인 학살이라고 해도 과언이 아닙니다.
이 축제가 생명윤리에 반하지 않는 생태적이고 지속가능한 행사로 탈바꿈하도록 행동해주십시오. 화천군에 요구하는 본 청원서에 참여해주십시오!
