Utah Global Warming Initiative

This petition is to build public support urging Utah Governor Jon Huntsman Jr. to issue a Resolution and Executive Order that will set greenhouse gas reduction targets for the entire state, similar to what California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger ordered last year for his state.

We, the undersigned individuals, as citizens who live, work, and attend school in Utah, are very concerned about the increasing threats to our state from global climate change. We believe that Utah has a responsibility to its citizens and to the rest of the world to take action to address this tremendous problem.

Governor Huntsman, we urge you to issue the following Resolution and Executive Order, consistent with the Kyoto Treaty, to set specific greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets for the State of Utah. This resolution proposes that the State of Utah adopt a target of seven percent reduction in GHG emissions below 1990 levels by 2012, followed by additional incremental GHG emissions reductions in decades to follow.  The Governor of Utah, in consultation with experts in climatology, atmospheric science, energy, and local, state, and national environmental leaders, would establish these additional reduction targets.

This Resolution and Executive Order will serve to demonstrate true leadership to the nation and the world. The State of Utah need not wait for a national mandate to take action on global warming. The evidence is unequivocal and we must act immediately to avoid the economic and environmental disasters that accompany inaction.
Thank you.
