Stop the New War on Drugs!
Over 100,000 people died last year from fatal drug overdoses, mostly driven by fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that's up to 50 times stronger than heroin.
Good Samaritan laws were designed to encourage people to call 911 if they witness an overdose. These laws offer legal protection to people who help others, ensuring that no one will be prosecuted for unintentional injury or death, even if illegal drugs are discovered when first responders arrive.
However, some lawmakers in Washington and our state capitols want to ignore these evidence-based practices that save lives and reduce harm.
Instead, these politicians are trying to weaponize the opioid epidemic and relaunch the failed War on Drugs, arresting people with substance use disorders, even charging them with murder if fentanyl is found on the scene.
Young People in Recovery opposes these practices and advocates for treatment—not jail—for people with substance use disorders.
No one should get arrested for calling for help when they're trying to save a life. Join forces with YPR to oppose the new War on Drugs. Insist that Good Samaritan laws be updated to reflect the current fentanyl crisis.
