Protect Caregivers from Losing Their Own Retirement!

Caring for a loved one with a long-term illness can be difficult and expensive, but it is something millions of Americans do every day.

All too often caregivers are hit with devastating financial losses. Not only do caregivers face big expenses and lost wages, but they will also receive lower Social Security benefits when they retire. Women, who provide the majority of caregiving, bear the brunt of this.

A new bill, H.R. 5024, would provide a Social Security earnings credit to long-term caregivers. It would help ensure caregivers are not hurt in their own retirement because of the work they do for family members and loved ones.

Caregiving is hard but incredibly valuable work. We must support — not penalize — these selfless women and men.
