We must end the sale of flavored e-cigarettes and all other flavored tobacco products. This includes menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars – which the tobacco industry uses to target and addict youth, especially in communities of color.

As your constituent, I'm writing to ask you to support legislation ending the sale of all flavored tobacco products in Connecticut. This includes flavored e-cigarettes, which are fueling a new youth nicotine addiction crisis – and menthol cigarettes, which the tobacco industry has long used to target and addict kids, especially in communities of color.
The latest CDC data shows that youth e-cigarette use remains at epidemic levels. Now, 3.6 million kids – including 1 in 5 high school students – are using e-cigs. An overwhelming majority of them say flavors are the reason they use them.
Meanwhile, more than half of youth smokers ages 12-17 use menthol cigarettes, compared to less than 1/3 of smokers age 35 and older. Menthol use is even higher among African American youth: 70% smoke menthols. And flavored cigars make up more than half of the U.S. cigar market.
Our neighbors are already addressing this problem, and Connecticut should do the same. Massachusetts has ended the sale of all flavored tobacco products, including e-cigarettes – while Rhode Island, New York, and New Jersey have ended the sale of all flavored e-cigarettes. We must join our neighbors and protect kids from all flavored tobacco products.
