Julia Gillard: Legalise Abortion, Then We'll Talk

"Abortion is the easy way out," Tony Abbott said in a 2004 speech. Prime Minister Julia Gillard recently confronted him on this and his consistently sexist rhetoric in a recent Parliamentary debate.

But her powerful speech left some of us questioning: when will she take her pro-choice stance to the next level?

For all her talk, Gillard has yet to legalise abortion for the women she champions. Australia's current abortion laws vary by state, and leave very little room for a woman's choice.

Most Australian states only allow abortion once medical professionals decide that carrying the baby full-term is a serious physical or mental health concern to the woman.

Without actions supporting her belief in a woman's right to choice and healthcare, Prime Minister Gillard can't help any women take charge of their own health.

Tell Julia Gillard to put her money where her mouth is and legalise abortion in Australia.
Dear Julia Gillard,

I applaud your diatribe against Tony Abbot's sexist language. However, calling out fellow politicians' sexist stances on reproductive only goes so far.

You have stated that women should have the right to choose and the right to healthcare, yet abortion is still treated as an offense in most of Australia. federally legalised throughout Australia.

[Your comments]

I urge you to follow through and federally legalise abortion without strict restrictions.

Sincerely,
