Following is excerpted text from The Humane Society of the United States' brochure regarding their campaign against Trader Joe's:
"Trader Joe's apparently thinks it's appropriate to confine egg-laying hens in barren, wire "battery cages" so small the birds can't even spread their wings - let alone engage in nearly any other important natural behaviors, such as nesting, foraging or even walking. The company claims that its patrons want the option of buying eggs from birds kept in such tiny cages that they can barely move.
Understanding the cruelty of battery cages and wanting to reduce the suffering of countless hesn, Whole Foods Market and Wild Oats Natural Marketplace have decided to stop selling eggs from birds confined in tiny battery cages. Trader Joe's continues to support this abusive practice.
Trader Joe's claims that its egg suppliers "follow strict guidelines for animal welfare." Does overcrowding hens in cages so restrictive they can never flap their wings sound like "strict guidelines" or good "animal welfare"?
Trader Joe's has listened to YOU, it's customers, on important issues in the past and adopted the kinds of socially responsible, compassionate policies you support.
Trader Joe's needs to hear from YOU that it should no longer support battery cage cruelty."
