Andres' brother, Jacinto, is three years older than him, but cops say he's more mellow and generally avoids the thug life. Despite their differences, cops say the brothers are close and they look out for each other. So when Jacinto's little brother found himself in trouble, cops believe he was going to try to help Andres get enough money to get out of town and go on the run from the murder charge.

On September 4, 2003, just a couple of weeks after Andres was charged with murder, police say Jacinto Maldonado participated in a two-car accident that was staged as part of an insurance scam to get some extra cash. Police say among the eight people recruited as passengers for the crash was Jacinto and Andres's grandmother, 65-year-old Altagracia Arias. Police say Altagracia Arias was a willing participant in the scam, and even tried to recruit other senior citizen friends from a nursing home in hopes of netting a couple thousand dollars posing as "injured patients" after the staged accident. The collision was a scam designed to allow all of the passengers to claim inuries, then run up medical treatment bills with shady chiropractors, doctors and lawyers in Lawrence who were part of the scam and stood to gain five-figure paydays for their "professional" services to their injured "clients". At the time of this incident, Lawrence was leading the state of Massachusetts in fraudulent. insurance personal injury claims.

But The staged accident did not go as choreographed.  Police say Jacinto Maldonado accelerated too fast, lost control after hitting the other vehicle, and crashed into a telephone pole. His grandmother was killed in the crash, and Jacinto Maldonado was charged with manslaughter in the death of his own grandmother.

The Maldonado brothers may be on the run together and could be hiding out in the New York City or northern New Jersey where they have numerous relatives. The Maldonado brothers are Dominican-Americans AMW.COM
