No More Tar Roofs Again

Our residential area was exposed to dangerous fumes from asphalt roofing tar for up to five, or more, days per week for over two years.  The community is now facing  at least one more season to complete the project. The application of roofing tar generates airborne chemicals (PAHs) and particles (PM 2.5) that are known to cause acute to chronic health problems, such as nose, throat, and lung irritation, asthma, emphysema, heart problems, damage to vital organs, and even cancer . During past work, some residents have developed sores in the nose, coughs, scratchy throats, headaches, flu-like symptoms, nausea, lung related illnesses such as lung infections, reactive airway disease, and asthma symptoms. We want the Arbors to cease roofing operations that involve asphalt roofing tar for the remainder of the roofs needing work and for them to use roofing materials that are not harmful to our environment, our health, and the health of our children. We are asking that asphalt roofing tar be restricted, especially in residential areas and on or near schools so that we will be protected from this dangerous roofing method and that others will be protected in the future.

Dear Mr. Ron Zeff, CEO of The Carmel Partners,

Please reconsider the plan to move forward with asphalt roofing tar for The Arbors at Antelope and consider one of the many alternatives for low slope or flat roofs  that do not release harmful fumes during application.

I see that you have made an attempt to use a safer asphalt product but after speaking to the Air Quality Inspector and learning that the %u201Cno smell%u201D asphalt and afterburner yields results of about half of the fume as the previous asphalt method during application I am overwhelmingly concerned that my family and community will still be exposed to fumes for such a long period of time.

As the steward of this property that so many people park their lives on, I do believe you owe us more care and consideration than to use a product for such a long period of time that can make us sick.  We must consider the health of the most vulnerable of our community: the children, elderly, pregnant women, and those with special health needs.

Because this campaign has always included an alternative solution rather than just complaints,  we ask that you take hot tar off of the table again and make a decision that does not force people to live in the midst of harmful fumes.

Madsen Roof Company just installed a TPO single ply to the roof of the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium, which is an 80 year old landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. If TPO is good enough for one of Sacramento%u2019s gems than it is definitely good enough for The Arbors.

Thank you for your thoughtful consideration on this matter.
