Stand behind the US Marines in the assault by Berkeley

  • van: Code Freedom
  • ontvanger: To demand that Berkeley CA repairs relations with the US Marines
We the undersigned, being free American citizens and residents, demand the city of Berkeley California take immediate action to repair relations with the US Marines Corps and the US Marine Corps Recruiting Center located at 64 Shattuck Square in Berkeley California.

We demand the following actions be taken immediately by the City Council of Berkeley and/or the Mayor of Berkeley California:

1. On January 29, 2008 the Berkeley City Council voted 6-3 in favor of sending a disgusting letter to the above-mentioned Marine Rucruiting Center informing them that the Marines are unwelcome in Berkeley, as well as referring to the servicemen as 'intruders' and 'uninvited'.

We demand
a public retraction of this, as well as apologies from the City Council and Mayor to the US Marine Corps and US service men and women worldwide offended by these outrageous comments.

2. On January 29, 2008 the Berkeley City Council voted 8-1 in favor of giving the anti-military group 'Code Pink' a designated parking space one day a week in front of the Marine Corps Recruiting Office in Berkeley California with the sole purpose of disrupting the Marine Center.

We demand that this misappropriation of city funds be rectified immediately and the permit revoked. Local businesses as well as the Marine Center are impacted by this 'free' parking for a group determined to monopolize "free speech" rights in Berkeley, and we feel local businesses should not be subject to the impact and penalty made by the 'free parking'.

3. On January 29, 2008 the Berkeley City Council voted 8-1 in favor of giving the anti-military group 'Code Pink' a sound permit allowing them to violate city noise ordinances in weekly protests aimed at disrupting business at the Marine Center. The sound permit allows, among other noise violations, bullhorns to be used to greatly amplify the noise generated by the protests. We believe the city is wrong to allow Code Pink to violate city law and to disrupt businesses with the sound permit. The laws protecting businesses and citizens from excessive noise exist purely to stop actions of this nature. The funds that pay these Council members and this Mayor should not be paying for direct violations of the law carried out by said members and Mayor.

We demand that the noise permit be revoked for Code Pink immediately so that business, as well as the peace, can be restored to normality on Shattuck Square.
