Transforming the UN thru a UN Charter Review Conference

PETITION TO RENEW THE UNITED NATIONS AND FULFILL THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

We the Peoples of these United Nations...

Determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which continues to result in the deaths of millions of people (primarily civilians, women, and children) in violation of both the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights;

Recalling our common and shared obligation to ensure that all peoples%u2019 fundamental human rights are met;

Seeking to establish, after 60 years, the conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations of international treaties and law can and will be carried out and maintained;

And demanding that Article 28 of the Universal Declaration, which states that everyone has the right to a Social and International Order under which these basic human rights are indeed met, be fulfilled;

We thus call upon our governments to organize and hold a UN Charter Review Conference in order to determine the extent to which the United Nations and its Member States do indeed live up to, or fail to live up to, the mandates and obligations of its foundational documents -- the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights -- along with the international treaties, agreements, and conventions that they have adopted and ratified.

In addition, the UN Charter Review Conference and Process should gather input and consider how the UN could be significantly strengthened and democratized in order to fulfill its commitments and obligations, welcoming the contributions and active and full participation of all people and civil society in the process. After all it is our world and lives that the UN and its Member States have continued to fail to protect, resulting in the ongoing suffering for millions or should we say billions of people. And it is time that this must change.

Until the UN does decide to hold a UN Charter Review Conference, as called for under Article 109 of its Charter, and takes the steps needed to strengthen and democratize the organization, and/or fully funds and implements the programs and initiatives that have been agreed to, then civil society must take the lead to hold its own Charter Review Conferences and Process. We the undersigned representatives of civil society will thus put forward our own proposals for what must be done to actually fulfill the mandates, obligations, and commitments that have been made by the United Nations.

We resolve, therefore, to do everything in our power to fulfill our obligations -- included in the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and shared with the Member States -- to take progressive measures, both national and international, to ensure that all peoples%u2019 fundamental human rights are fulfilled, the scourge of war is ended, all international treaties and laws are maintained and respected, all peoples have a just & prosperous quality of life, and all of our basic human needs are met.
