Abolish Columbus Day and Adopt Indigenous Peoples' Day in Palo Alto

Columbus Day is offensive to indigenous peoples. It celebrates the myth that America was terra nullius, no one's land, and erases the history of genocide of indigenous Americans. Its celebration symbolizes the whitewashing of America's story, the perpetuation of American's false innocence, and the ongoing erasure of indigenous peoples.

In 1992 the city of Berkeley abolished Columbus Day and adopted Indigenous Peoples' Day. Since then cities and states across the country have followed suit. Palo Alto is long overdue.

Ask the Palo Alto City Council to proclaim the second Monday in October Indigenous Peoples Day in Palo Alto annually.
