Demand for Thornhill health facilities

I am a mum of a child that did not thrive while I was breastfeeding. She did not put weight on according to expectations and regularly needed weighing to track her development. Much to my dismay we have found that Locala has made the decision to pull their health visitor and breastfeeding support from Thornhill although demand is still high for the facility. The decision has been undertaken due to the fact that surestart facilities are closing although it is still not known what is happening to the building and has been in this position for a full year. The building currently offers a childcare facility on a Friday and a thriving Stay n Play session on a Thursday when the Health Visitor is currently in attendance. The traffic from the health visitor gives the mum's an opportunity to get their baby weighed and then come into stay n play and interact with other mums and the breastfeeding peer support who is also a volunteer to the group. Upon investigation I have found that the only 'local' facility beyond our bustling village is 2 bus rides away at Ravensthorpe. Geographically on a map it looks quite close but actually means that to access a health visitor then a new mum would have to travel to Dewsbury and then get a bus to Ravensthorpe. As a result of this I fear that many children won't get weighed and this puts a serious risk to babies welfare in an already deprived area. The Stay n Play already operates on a volunteer basis to offer psychological support to new mums who can often feel isolated and therefore helps to reduce the demand on medical services so it is a shock that Locala have also decided to put more pressure on other medical services as it would mean that any developmental issues will not be spotted within the early stages. The Health Visitor is very much needed and I would like Locala to rethink their decision until a decision has been made to what is happening to the building. Volunteers at the Stay n Play have already been given access codes for when Surestart staff are permanently pulled from the facility and will continue to run as normal even through school holidays so the decision to remove the health visitor due to this small detail is ludicrous and poorly informed. Please could people support this petition to make Locala rethink their decision and give the babies of this deprived area a better chance of developing healthily.

Thank you all for your support. 70 signatures is amazing in the first day. Please keep sharing as quickly as possible as time is of the essence as once it's closed I really don't think it'll come back. I'll be pushing the local candidates to back me on such an important issue. My own kids may not need a health visitor anymore but the next wave of babies will. Let's give Thornhill kids a better chance
