Dear Superintendent Garcia,
I am writing today to urge you to expand the composting program at all SFUSD High Schools. Currently,
Lowell High School is the only school to have a successful composting program. As you are aware, composting reduces the need for landfills, which means l
ess money is wasted for pick-up.
Composting will help with the state budget crisis as well, since the money saved from composting can help schools regain lost teacher positions. Please expand and support the composting program by inclusion of the following measures:
1.
Raise the awareness of protecting the environment through composting. Although many people understand recycling, composting has a larger impact since it produces zero waste. Composting should be out in the open and encouraged.
2.
Implement compost bins at all SFUSD High Schools. Thus far, Balboa, Lincoln, Washington, and Mission High do not have composting; Galileo and Burton High have neither composting nor recycling. More elementary and middle schools have composting and recycling programs than high schools; should not this be the other way around? High schools should be the role models for the younger ones.
3.
Take this course of action to expand composting to San Francisco residents. All S.F. residents have a blue, blacl, and green bin but a majority do not bother using the latter. Let schools be role models for the city.
