Homewood Dog Park
In Short: If you feel that providing the citizens of Homewood with a dog park should be a top priority for the Parks and Recreation department, and that a dog park should be considered specifically as an integrated portion of Patriot Park in West Homewood, then please sign now. We need all the support we can get before we present at the Park and Rec Board meeting this Thursday, February 3rd!

By signing this petition, you are putting your support behind years of effort to bring a designated, fenced dog park to the city of Homewood.
On Thursday, February 3rd, the Homewood Park and Recreation board is set to vote on the master plan of West Homewood's Patriot Park. (This is not "West Homewood Park" but the green space at the corner of Oak Grove Rd & Oxmoor Rd, across from The Briary) Decisions in the next few weeks and months will go a long way in shaping the future of this Homewood neighborhood.
Bark for a Park (barkforapark.org), a Birmingham metro not-for-profit, and many residents of Homewood, myself included, would like to see the Park and Recreation board formally consider the option of incorporating a dog park in the Patriot Park master plan. In recent renderings done by Bark for a Park, of the total of 9 acres of park land available, less than 2.5 acres would be dedicated to the dog park. This disturbs none of the "green space" that has typically been used for soccer, football, etc. The potential dog park would utilize the southernmost acreage, roughly from the culvert to the parking lot for the Senior Center. (If you would like to see drawings, prior to taking action, please email)
A dog park is an environmentally friendly, fiscally responsible and total unique public service for the city of Homewood. By comparison, on the high end, this project would cost 3.5% of what was spend on the Homewood Soccer Complex in 2009 alone ($1.4 million), however the park would be a unique service to the over 6,000 Homewood dog owners.
Dog owners would not be the only winners in this equation, but West Homewood businesses, such as The Briary, Homewood Diner and all the shops directly across from the park would certainly benefit from the increased visibility.
If you need convincing, please don't hesitate to visit the Hoover, Loch Haven dog park, which was recently erected by the Hoover Parks and Recreation board (3469 Loch Haven Dr
Hoover, AL, US) It is a great example of the type of atmosphere we would like to bring to Homewood. A dog park is truly something that must be experienced to be fully appreciated.
Thank you for your time and hopefully your support. We all want what we feel is best for Homewood, so don't hesitate to email and share your thoughts and ideas. In the meantime, please sign!
Thank you,
Erik Henninger
