The Nuclear Waste Management Organization is looking for a place to build a massive nuclear waste dump in Canada, and it believes that New Brunswick's geological formations would be suitable for the long-term storage of the entire country's radioactive garbage!
We the undersigned draw our elected officials' attention to the following:
That:
- radioactivity is a cause of deformities, cancer, and death
- transporting nuclear waste to New Brunswick could result in accidents causing contamination spills that would harm the people of New Brunswick and contaminate our land and watersheds for millennia
- the impact of storing large amounts of nuclear waste deep in the ground are unknown; will need monitoring for millennia; and could cause horrific accidents or contamination hundreds of thousands of years from now
Therefore, we petitioners call on Premier Shawn Graham and Members of the Legislative Assembly to reject any plans for a centralized, nuclear waste storage facility anywhere in New Brunswick.
We also call on all mayors in New Brunswick to similarly reject any plans to locate any such centralized nuclear waste storage facility in this province.
