Implement Laws to Forbid Food Waste in California

Approximately 30-40% of food is waste in the United States, approximately 60 million tons of produce annually. Meanwhile 48.1 million Americans lived in food insecure households. Only 13 percent of all the wasted food is being donated. Many parents struggle to feed their kids and many elder people don't know where their next meal will come from.

Supermarkets play a major role in food waste, first by having high aesthetic standards in fruit and vegetables. Tons of produce, that are perfectly edible and have the same nutrients never make it to the supermarkets because they are consider ugly to sell. Wasting labor and vital resources along of how they handle the produce. Food and money is lost across farms, manufactures, restaurants by having such a high aesthetic standard.

According to the California Integrated Waste Management Board, Food is the largest single source of waste in California, making up 15.5 percent of the Golden State's waste stream. Most of the food ends up on dumpsters and is not properly disposed, creating methane gas when decomposing. Methane is more pollutant than CO2 and is harming our environment. Most of the States water goes to agriculture, by wasting food we are also wasting vital resources.

The problem of food waste is not only happening in America; it is indeed a global problem. France has become the first country in the world to ban supermarkets from throwing away or destroying unsold food, forcing them instead to donate it to Charities and food banks. They are also educating younger generations about world hunger and food waste.

Many supermarkets claim that they don't donate food waste because they are afraid of lawsuits involving health issues. But supermarkets are protected by the Good Samaritan Food Donation Act which protects them from getting in lawsuits. Another way to encourage supermarkets to donate is by giving them economic incentives like tax breaks.

What I'm asking is for the government to implement laws that prohibit food waste from supermarkets but also to include policies and reforms necessary for the food waste donation and proper disposal. By preventing food waste, we will be not only helping those in need but also our environment. By donating unsold food to charities and food banks, supermarkets could help to end food insecurity. If we follow France steps and start creating educational programs to educate our population about food waste and create conscious.

By signing this petition, you will be helping to save thousands of pounds' worth of edible food. And obligating supermarkets to donate unsold food to the food banks and charities which would be able to help thousands of families, homeless, college students, just to mention a few.

Let's stop food Waste.
