Pitcher Park Memorial Skate Park is a grass roots effort by a community and the mother of two boys who drowned while on a camping trip with their father and friends. Stephen (19) and Vincent (21) were found seven hours later, still holding onto each other 100 ft deep in the Kinzua Resevoir in Allegheny National Forest.
Stephen was an avid skateboarder and Vincent loved to ride BMX bikes among other sports. They grew up in Dormont and had thousands of friends who considered themselves part of the family. The community has been grieving terribly for these boys who were full of life, fun and who cared so much for their friends and family.
Coming from a family with four boys, their Mother, Mary Pitcher saw a dior need for a safe place to ride bikes and skateboard in a congested, densely populated city type setting. The streets, side walks and parking lots are not condusive to riding bikes safely in Dormont. Thus the grass roots effort took off and the supporters of Pitcher Park are now trying to
get written support from the community, surrounding communities, and interested individuals, to help the Dormont council see the importance of a
skate park to the youth of their community.
It is hoped that, Pitcher Park Memorial Skate Park will be completely donated through grants and donations of money, materials, and supplies.
We are currently a 501 (C) 3 through New Sun Rising Org.
Although skate boarding, bmx biking and rollerblading are now reccognized as sports, there is still a stigmatism attached to these sports as opposed to basic organized team sports and we are running into some opposition to this project and need your support to show how important it would be to get the youth out of our dangerous streets and give them a safe place to practice their individual sports together. Thank you!
We the above undersigned, are in full support of the placement of Pitcher Park Memorial Skate Park in Dormont. I believe the youth in Dormont and the surrounding communities who bike, skateboard and rollerblade need a safe, maintained and community supported place to participate in their recreation of choice. I believe Pitcher Park will greatly benefit youth of all ages, the surrounding communities, local businesses, and will be a great way to let youth know that they are a part of their community too. I also think having a skate park in Dormont will decrease the incidents of youth skateboarding, riding their bikes, and rollerblading in prohibited areas around Dormont, this provideing safer sidewalks and streets for the youth and the community at large.
I VOTE YES FOR PITCHER PARK.
