From 2006 to 2008, the city of College Park witnessed 36 robberies, 463 burglaries, and 36 cases of aggravated assault. In addition, there were 80 incidents of forcible sexual offense. 62 of these occurred on UMD's campus alone, 53 specifically in the dorms.
It's crucial to know how to defend yourself in case you are ever the victim of an attack. R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense System) is a women's self defense course that was previously offered at the University of Maryland. Its trained instructors teach realistic self defense tactics and techniques for women. This class is currently offered at Towson University, Johns Hopkins University, Salisbury University, UMBC, and at hundreds of other schools around the country. Sadly, interest from University of Maryland students was low, leading to a discontinuation of the class a few years back. However, we still feel that self defense should be a top priority, especially for the women of College Park.
Thus, we propose a reinvention of the RAD system as a credited class. We believe that offering credit will encourage students to sign up and solve the problem of lack of interest.
Please sign our petition to prove to the University that this class is crucial for the women of College Park and to demonstrate your interest in taking the course once it is brought back to UMD. Thanks a lot!
