Protect the Lynx
Suffering from heavy trapping and habitat degradation, the Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) has become exceedingly rare in the lower 48 states. It is unknown how many remain, but Montana and Washington appear to be the only states with significant populations. For the last two decades, Defenders has been actively involved in assuring that this reclusive forest carnivore is federally protected and action is taken to recover lynx populations.
The Canada lynx is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act and federal law prohibits killing wild lynx. In 2006 two dead Canada lynx were found by the Colorado Division of Wildlife. Led by Defenders, a coalition of conservation groups announced that they are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the persons responsible for illegally killing these two rare wildcats. We are hopeful that this reward with bring the lynx killers to justice and discourage future poaching.
