FAO The Cyprus Government
Dear Sir

The Island of Cyprus is very beautiful with beaches, mountains, historical buildings and modern towns.
We the undersigned feel the Island is spoilt by the horrific animal cruelty which goes unmonitored and unpunished by the Cyprus authorities.

We ask that you please consider the following issues and act with urgency.

1) Chaining/Caging
Dogs across the island are chained/caged 24 hours a day (often by hunters) with no food, water, shelter from the elements. They are released only to hunt and then are beaten and mistreated- often shot when the hunting season is finished. Donkeys and horses are tethered in the heat with no shade or water.
Any animal found in this way must be confiscated, the owner prosecuted and banned from ever owning animals again.

2) Poisonings
Lanate poison is now illegal in Cyprus yet it is bought and sold as before. Cats and dogs are illegally poisoned and suffer agonising deaths. Yet the police response? "Its only an animal we wont do anything"
The ban must be enforced with anyone buying/selling or poisoning to be prosecuted. The police must be trained to take this seriously or an animal police division installed.

3) Glue Sticks
Glue sticks are used island wide to trap and kill tiny birds for consumption. This practice is illegal and cruel often resulting in the bird pulling its own legs off to try and escape. Yet despite being illegal many restaurants still serve these tiny birds and glue sticks are still readily available and sold.
Get tough Cyprus enforce your laws - prosecute anyone involved in this cruel practice.

4) Animal Shelters
Animal shelters across the island continue to receive little or no funding yet you, the government, are happy for them to continue taking in stray and injured animals. The shelters are run by kind hearted volunteers and are financially stretched to the point of closing down or having to euthanise fit and healthy animals.
This is a government problem and you cannot continue to ignore it! Start giving these shelters some funding and educating people to neuter and care for their animals.

Remember "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." - What on earth does this say about Cyprus?

The world is watching and waiting for you to do the right thing.

Thank you
