Thank Oregon For Making Birth Control Available Without a Prescription

Oregon has become the first state to let women over 18 buy birth control pills without a prescription. As pregnancy, even in the best circumstances, is more dangerous than birth control, this is an obvious step in the right direction. The new Oregon law has the potential to prevent many unwanted pregnancies, especially among young women who are afraid to admit they are having sex to their doctors or their parents.

Oregon's change is likely to inspire other states. California is already considering the same move, and further positive change is likely ahead. Please join with me in thanking the Oregon state legislature for making birth control pills available to adult women without a prescription.

Dear Oregon State Legislators:

We the undersigned are delighted to learn that you have made birth control  pills available to women 18 and older without a prescription. We all know that sex is often unplanned. Young people, in particular, are in danger of having sex without taking the necessary precaution of first making an appointment, seeing a doctor, and filling a prescription. We predict that immediate access to birth control will substantially curb unwanted pregnancies in your state. And we hope that other states will follow suit. So we are taking this opportunity to thank you for this sensible measure.
