USF students, staff and faculty are outraged that the Yuengling Center (previously named the USF Sun Dome) has rented its facility to South Carolina-based promoters to bring singer R. Kelly to campus on November 10, 2018.
"Robert R. Kelly is the Bill Cosby of Black American music," said Aisha Durham, Associate Professor of Communication at the University of South Florida. "The self-proclaimed 'Pied Piper of R&B' is a noted sexual predator who has been charged with grooming girls and sexually battering young women."
In this #Metoo moment when sexual assault survivors are stepping forward to disclose abuse, when citizens are still reeling from the riveting testimony by a professor who relived her trauma before the nation, and when students are initiating global conversations about consent, rape culture, and sexual harassment, R. Kelly's love melodies of misogyny should have no place in the Tampa Bay community.
Popular culture can be used to reinforce sexism and racism. The "Pied Piper" wants us to forget allegations of sexual misconduct when we remember his popular music hits at the "Memory Lane Tour." Survivors also remember. USF students, staff and faculty remember. Together, we are using our collective voice to call on the Yuengling Center to cancel the R. Kelly concert.
