Two Police Dogs Died After Being Left in a Hot SUV for Seven Hours. Justice for Rip and Boomer!

Rip, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois, and Boomer, a 6-year-old springer spaniel, were trusted K-9 partners and valued members of the Salem County Sheriff's Office. Rip and Boomer dedicated their lives to serving and protecting their community. But in May, both dogs died after allegedly being left inside a county-issued SUV for approximately seven hours with the windows closed and no air-conditioning. How could this have happened?

Sign the petition urging the Salem County Sheriff's Office to conduct a comprehensive, independent review of its K-9 program and strengthen its standards for selecting, training, and supervising the people trusted to care for police dogs.

According to prosecutors, Rip and Boomer were left inside the vehicle from approximately 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. A necropsy determined that they likely died from hyperthermia and heat stroke.

Even on a mild day, the inside of a closed vehicle can quickly become deadly. Studies suggest that when it is only 70 degrees outside, temperatures inside a vehicle parked in the sun can reach 113 degrees within an hour. Rip and Boomer were reportedly trapped for seven hours.

Even more troubling, court documents indicate that an emergency system designed to warn the handler when the vehicle became dangerously hot was functioning but was "presumably turned off." The vehicle had also reportedly experienced an air-conditioning leak, and nearby kennels were available where the dogs could have been safely housed.

The Salem County Sheriff's Office must determine how this was allowed to happen and whether stronger safeguards could have saved Rip and Boomer's lives.

The department should commission a comprehensive, independent review of its entire K-9 program, including how handlers are selected, trained, certified, supervised, and evaluated. The review should also examine vehicle safety procedures, heat-alert systems, equipment maintenance, emergency protocols, and accountability when safety requirements are ignored.

Sign the petition now to urge the Salem County Sheriff's Office to launch an independent review of its K-9 program and prevent a tragedy like this from ever happening again!
