After the reading the speech from Sean Smith from Campbell River over facebook it got me thinking that everybody should be talking about changing BC Ferries. It’s the life line of our island and the islands around us.
The facts are is that it’s harder and more expensive than ever to get on and off the the islands, and it’s only getting worse for residents who rely on these services being reliable and affordable. With that, we lose potential economic benefits to our way of life. According to a recent report, B.C. has missed out on more than $2 billion in economic activity over the past decade because of rising fares on BC Ferries, (UBCM, 2014).
This shouldn't be the case, period. The system was put in place for the people of the islands and to bring in more business, NOT the other way around. There needs to be awareness, discussion and action, so this page has been created to talk about how we can work with BC Ferries and the government to work to change how the system works, and to keep the BC Ferries affordable for the people of the islands. This is my petition as Joshua Way
: I rely on BC Ferries being affordable, to get me from A to B, and to continue bringing investment and business to the islands. I am calling for accountability, transparency and responsibility by BC Ferries to continue keeping the ferries affordable, as the “essential transportation link that connects coastal communities” (BC Ferries).
