Sudan: Freedom of Speech is a Human Right

The Sudanese Government has been cracking down on peaceful protesters and the press following the announcement of a new austerity package.

On the streets of Khartoum, police forces have been reported using tear gas and rubber bullets on protesters and men in plain clothes have been seen beating protesters with metal rods. There are also reports that security officials entered university classes and beat students with batons.

The protesters are angry about government plans to terminate fuel subsidies and other measures which they believe will increase inflation and poverty, affecting the vulnerable the most.

The press are under more severe control with increased pre-publication censorship and several newspapers have had their copies confiscated. Furthermore a British journalist was arrested for interviewing and taking pictures of protesters.

The US State Department have condemned the actions of the government towards the protesters saying that they are, deeply concerned. Freedom of expression is a human right. The Government of Sudan must stop abusing its citizens.

To the Government of Sudan,

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned the widely reported violence towards protesters and the increased censorship of the press. The human rights of peaceful protesters and journalists alike must be respected.

According to The Declaration of Human Rights, Article 19, “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”

We are calling on the Government to stop the unjust and inhumane treatment of Sudanese civilians by security forces.
