A friendly neighborhood cat in San Jose is recovering after surviving an act of horrifying violence. He was shot with a six-inch crossbow bolt in what was clearly a deliberate attack.
The cat, known to neighbors as Huerro, was found injured and struggling. A concerned community member rushed him to an emergency veterinary hospital, where staff discovered the bolt had pierced through the base of his tail. Thankfully, emergency surgery saved his life.

This was not an accident. Shortly after Huerro was found, a matching crossbow bolt was discovered in the same neighborhood. That strongly suggests someone is intentionally targeting animals in this community. There are many cats — including kittens — living nearby, and residents are now afraid that another animal could be next.
Violence against animals is a serious red flag. Research shows that animal abuse is often a precursor to escalating violence. When someone is willing to use a weapon on a defenseless animal, ignoring it puts both animals and people at risk.
Huerro survived because neighbors acted quickly and compassionately. The next victim might not be so lucky.
