Over the years there have been numerous times the san diego animal control / now Humane Society has picked up a stray and made the determination to euthanize the same day. This has got to end.
Because an elderly or sick animal has mobility issues or does not "Look" healthy is not a valid determination. The 3 day hold is required and should be for ALL who are not experiencing a life or death situation. The San Diego Humane Society should not be in the business of deciding QUALITY of LIFE when their decision is purely based on finances; and has no empathy or regards for the deep bonds between many pet parents to their animals. Bonds that are very often as strong and real as humans have for their own.
My own dog pictured here was slated for euthanasia as well. I got lucky that the 2nd veterinarian on staff the night he was schedule to die, refused to do it! That vet is someone that due to those circumstances, I've gotten to know very well over the years.
Should we fear animal control officers driving by and forcing us to relinquish our pet while on a walk because it can't walk well enough or because an animal control officer thinks the pet is breathing too hard? Yes, I'm being riddiculous but so is putting down a 13 yr old husky that has arthritis the same day he wondered off. Or a 15 yr old blind poodle that escaped her bathtime without her collar and wonder into a neighbor yard and got taken to the animal control where she was killed within in hours.
If animal control is allowed to determine your pet is too sick or old to live for 2 more days (which is their reasoning) then why do they not ticket people for not putting down their pets for being old or sick? The reason why is because, assuming the pet is not neglected, it is WRONG!
