Demand Stricter Protections and Systematic Reform for Women’s Safety in China!

For too long, women in China have lived with the reality that public spaces are not guaranteed to be safe. The horrific 2022 Tangshan restaurant attack—where women were brutally beaten simply for saying "no" to harassment—exposed a terrifying culture of entitlement and a lack of immediate protection. Despite some arrests, the root causes remain: harassment is often downplayed as a "private dispute," and the fear of retaliation prevents many from speaking out. No woman should have to look over her shoulder while eating dinner or walking home.

The Solution:
We call on the Chinese government and local authorities to move beyond temporary "strike-hard" campaigns and implement permanent, systemic changes:

Strict Legal Reclassification: Treat gender-based harassment and violence with the severity of criminal assault, ensuring perpetrators cannot simply pay a fine to avoid jail.

Mandatory Training: Require specialized training for police officers on how to handle gender-based violence cases with empathy and urgency, rather than dismissal.

Public Safety Infrastructure: Increase surveillance and rapid-response units in nightlife and dining districts specifically focused on preventing harassment.

Educational Reform: Launch national awareness campaigns that challenge the culture of male entitlement and promote the "bystander effect" intervention training.
