Cuomo Wants to Give Harvey Weinstein a Pass, But We Say No Breaks for Sexual Predators

When we go to law enforcement for help, we expect to be taken seriously. That's why so many people were outraged to learn that Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance declined to press charges against Harvey Weinstein when model Ambra Battilana Gutierrez accused him of groping in 2015 — and had audio of him admitting it.

It turned out that Vance might have had a good reason for declining to move forward with the case: David Boies, an attorney representing Weinstein at the time, had donated to his campaign. In response to outcry, Governor Andrew Cuomo directed the state attorney general's office to investigate.

Now that story has repeated itself, except this time, it's Cuomo pausing the investigation into Vance — right after getting a donation from David Boies. Boies may no longer be associated with Weinstein formally, but he certainly has an interest in suppressing the investigation.

Cuomo's office says this step is necessary because Vance's office is moving forward with a criminal investigation and charges, and the AG's office needs to step back to allow the office to focus on doing its work. Representatives also claim that an ongoing investigation could open itself to discovery filings from Weinstein's lawyers, potentially hampering the criminal case.

But some people smell a rat:

Why did Cuomo decide to halt the investigation so soon after a campaign donation?

Why is his office saying the hold on the investigation is "temporary" despite knowing that the criminal case may drag on for years, making it progressively harder to investigate irregularities?

Why are wealthy people who donate to the campaigns of law enforcement and politicians getting special treatment when people are supposed to receive equal consideration under the law?

Why does Vance's office have a history of failing to move on sexual harassment and assault cases?

The governor's office needs to reconsider this decision: Vance needs to be investigated to determine not just whether improprieties occurred in 2015, but why his office has repeatedly failed to aggressively pursue sexual assault and harassment cases.
