Mandatory training for early childhood workers to recognize trauma!

Drug addiction is a nationwide crisis. Every day children suffer because they're living with addicted parents. Many times, children will not reach out to anyone for help and are forced to grow up in a toxic, unhealthy environment. The Recognizing Early Childhood Trauma Related to Substance Abuse Act of 2018 proposes that the Department of Health would be required to provide training to early childhood workers to recognize and respond to a child experiencing the trauma of living with addicted family members.

It's estimated that there are 8.7 million children growing up in a household where at least one parent is addicted to drugs (SAMHSA, 2017).

Children of substance abusing parents show increased rates of anxiety, depression, oppositional behavior and conduct problems. They are at a greater risk for abuse, neglect and developing attachment disorders (Solis, Shadur, Burns, Hussong). Studies have shown that children of drug addicted parents have higher rates of mental disorders and are more likely to become drug users, themselves (Peleg-Oren, Teichman, 2006).

Teaching early childhood workers to be able to recognize a child living with trauma from parental drug use can potentially help millions of children and even their parents. Children of substance abusing parents are in desperate need of proper counseling and will be able to receive it if the trauma is recognized and addressed. Parents will be urged to go to treatment and become sober for their children. If the course of action is not followed, Child Protective Services will always become involved if necessary.

As stated in the NASW Code of Ethics (2017), social workers recognize the central importance of human relationships. The most important relationship in a child’s life is the relationship with their parents. If this bill is passed, it can help strengthen millions of relationships and therefore provide a better foundation for children to grow up with the quality of life that they deserve!
