Secondhand smoke consist of exhaled smoke from smokers and sidestream smoke from the burning end of a cigarette, cigar or pipe. Secondhand smoke contains seven thousand substances including 70 compounds known to cause cancer. Second hand smoke can trigger asthma episodes and increase the severity of attacks.
Cigarette butts are toxic waste. Worldwide it is estimated that 1.69 billion pounds of cigarette butts end up as waste each year. The toxic chemicals in cigarette butts are a threat to the aquatic ecosystems. The substances that leak out are highly toxic to aquatic micro-organisms. Smoking poses a direct threat to our forest homes and parks. In fact, discarded cigarette butts have been linked to large wildfires resulting in the destruction of wildlife, vegetation and property.
