The endangered whale shark is one of the largest species of fish; yet it is rather docile and don’t post much danger to humans. Like the peaceful, slow-moving whale that they are, they feed primarily on plankton and are known even to sometimes let humans hop on their back for a ride. They deserve to live their serene lives in the oceans as they are meant.
A wildlife organization recently discovered, through a three-year investigation into the operation that the endangered fish are being processed at a Zhejiang, China plant called “China Wenzhou Yueqing Marine Organisms Health Protection Foods Co Ltd” in order to make cosmetics, like lipstick. Fishermen are paid $30,000 per shark for the purpose of making the lipstick and other products.
Aside from drying out the fins to attract customers and utilizing their skin for leather products, the oil in the whale shark’s liver is made into skin care products and Omega-3 supplements. Additionally, the supplements are actually sold internationally, in direct violation of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. China’s laws are much too lenient compared to other parts of the country but they need to step up and stop this practice of killing this docile animal. Hong Kong Government Officials – After you create laws throughout China, you need to be more stringent and do more to enforce them. The practice of killing the gentle, defenseless whale shark for the purpose of monetary gain through utilizing their bodies for fish oil supplements and lipstick is appalling. Stop this practice of killing these animals! Punish those in the operation, such as China Wenzhou Yueqing Marine Organisms Health Protection Foods Co Ltd and protect the whale shark. Let them live peacefully in the oceans are they are meant.
