Act Now to Protect a Generation of Children in Canada and Around the World
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt all our lives, children around the world are at risk of losing something irreplaceable, their education. assinar petiçãoassinar petição
When the pandemic hit the world's schools shut their doors to over 90% of students across the globe. For the first time in history, an entire generation has had their education disrupted.
After months stuck at home, many children will soon be heading back to class. Not every child is so lucky. Our new Save Our Education report warns that 10 million children may never set foot in a classroom again. The children most at risk of never returning to school are those living in poorer countries, in refugee camps and war zones and especially girls.
School for these children was about more than getting an education. It was a place where they could feel safe, receive a nutritious meal and even health services. As each day passes they grow more vulnerable to violence, hunger, child marriage, early pregnancy and child labour and their chance of returning to school decreases.
That's why Save the Children is working around the clock to keep children safe, protected and ensure they continue learning during the COVID-19 crisis. However, we can't do this alone and urgently call on world leaders, including the government of Canada, to take concrete action to ensure:
• All children continue to learn while schools are closed through inclusive distance learning.
• Every child is supported to return to school when it is safe to do so.
• Governments and donors invest in education now so we can build better education systems for the future.
Canada has led on global education efforts in the past. Before the pandemic hit Canada vowed to ensure that all refugee and displaced children get the education they need and deserve and it is more important now than ever that Canada fulfills this promise.
Sign and stand with all the world's children. We must do whatever it takes to protect children in Canada and around the world during the COVID-19 crisis.
