Support the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act

Breast cancer affects both women and men. The National Cancer Institute estimates that approximately 210,000 people will be diagnosed with the disease in 2010; and almost 40,000 will die from breast cancer. But is our health care system providing the help that these patients need? Many are forced to leave the hospital just hours after undergoing a major surgery for breast cancer due to pressure from insurance companies.

The Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act (BCPPA) prevents this from happening by guaranteeing patients the right to a minimum hospital stay of 48 hours after a mastectomy or lumpectomy and 24 hours after a lymph node removal. The BCPPA ensures that patients and doctors decide the duration of a hospital visit, not insurance companies. It also demands coverage for breast cancer patients seeking second opinions.

This bill has been put off far too long. Tell your Representatives to support the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act today.
Dear [decision maker],

I support the Breast Cancer Patient Protection (BCPPA) Act, which prevents insurance companies from pressuring hospitals to release patients before they are fully recovered. It guarantees a woman's right to a minimum hospital stay of 48 hours after a mastectomy or lumpectomy and 24 hours after a lymph node removal. The bill also guarantees insurance coverage for patients seeking second opinions.
