Scientists around the world agree: we must reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 to avoid the most catastrophic and irreversible effects of climate change on our environment and our communities. This will be nearly impossible unless we end our dependence on fossil fuels.
In the U.S. alone, air pollution from burning fossil fuels already causes an estimated 230,000 deaths and $600 billion in economic losses every year.
Luckily, we already have a solution: clean, renewable energy. Here are just a few the many benefits of renewable energy:
- Decarbonizing the economy could create 25 million jobs over the next 15 years.
- Solar panel installers and wind turbine technicians are already two of the fastest growing jobs in the country.
- If the U.S. switches from fossil fuels to renewable energy, we could reduce our CO2 emissions by nearly 80% in just 15 years, without an increase to consumer electricity costs.
- Renewable energy is significantly cheaper to produce than it was just at the beginning of this century, and the costs of wind and solar energy continue to steadily fall.
- Solar energy is the most abundant energy source on the planet. In a single hour, the sun provides the Earth with enough energy to power the entire planet for a year.
- 79% of Americans think the U.S. should prioritize developing alternative energy sources such as wind and solar.
The environmental, economic, and health benefits of renewable energy are clear — and they are simply too important to ignore.
