Make Sure New Mexico's Largest Utility Creates A Real Clean Energy Transition Plan.

The Energy Transition Act (ETA) put New Mexico on a path to transitioning to a clean energy future that will help us directly address the climate crisis. Now it is time to ensure it is implemented correctly.

As part of the transition laid out in the ETA, New Mexico's largest energy provider, Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM), will soon file their plans for replacing the power generated by it's soon-to-shutter coal plants with the state's Public Regulation Commission (PRC).

While this is good news, New Mexicans must be vigilant. In order to build resilient communities and protect our air, land and water, we must ensure PNM's plan for replacement power include:

No new natural gas. The natural gas extraction process continues to be under-regulated. Volatile organic compounds including benzene and methylene chloride, are leaked, vented and flared during the process, and have been linked to asthma and other respiratory issues. New gas infrastructure and development will not serve New Mexico's carbon-free goals, protect public health nor address the climate crisis.

Impact assessments for social, health and environmental impacts of all replacement power proposals. The PRC must ensure that any of PNM's proposals include accurate, robust and thorough impact assessments that quantify the real costs to community health and habitat quality for all replacement power scenarios.

It is up to all of us to ensure that the ETA is implemented in a thorough and equitable manner. Sign the petition to ensure that the Public Regulation Commission fully vets PNM's plans while urging the utility to continue to negotiate in good faith.
