The U.S. must welcome more refugees next year

For forty years, refugee resettlement has been a critical tool for the U.S. to respond to emerging humanitarian crises. Today, the rapidly escalating need to protect endangered Afghans is a reminder of how important it is for U.S. leaders to set an ambitious refugee admissions goal that ensures the U.S. is flexible and agile enough to do its part when there are unexpected needs around the world.

Amidst the largest global refugee crisis in history, this program provides life-saving humanitarian assistance to refugees fleeing violence and persecution in countries like Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia, Myanmar, the Congo and Venezuela. For those with no other option, resettlement is a last resort and necessary lifeline. And when the U.S. leads, other countries follow: robust refugee admissions show the world that the U.S. is serious about building a renewed global commitment to refugee protection.

Together, we can ensure America lives up to its highest ideals. A robust resettlement program enables the U.S. to respond with agility to unexpected refugee crises around the world. Join the International Rescue Committee's advocacy community as we call on Congress to ask that they press the Biden Administration to set a refugee admissions goal of 200,000 for next fiscal year.

Dear [Legislator Title] [Legislator Last Name],

I am writing to urge you to ask the Biden Administration to set the Fiscal Year 2022 (FY22) Presidential Determination on Refugee Admissions at 200,000 refugees. A robust resettlement program enables the U.S. to respond with agility to unexpected refugee crises around the world. The rapidly escalating need to protect endangered Afghans is a stark reminder of how important it is for the U.S. to have an ambitious refugee admissions goal. Yet Afghanistan is not the only a region with quickly changing humanitarian conditions and protection needs. The conflict in Tigray, Ethiopia and China's crackdown on political dissidents in Hong Kong are also demonstrating how important it is to have a resettlement program that is robust, flexible, and agile. With just 6,274 refugees resettled to the U.S. in FY21 to date, this year is on track to have the lowest admissions ever in the history of the program. While the U.S. has long been a global leader in refugee resettlement, that legacy is under threat. Now is the time for the U.S. to boldly reassert its commitment to refugee protection and to lead the international community in rebuilding global resettlement commitments. Only 34,400 refugees resettled worldwide last year – the lowest figure in two decades – and American leadership is critical. Thank you for your time and efforts on behalf of persecuted people.

Sincerely,
