Tell Congress to End Racial Disparities Related to COVID-19 and HIV

In just eight months, COVID-19 has taken the lives of over 215,000 Americans. It's the worst public health crisis we've seen in the U.S. since the AIDS epidemic.

Sadly, both crises are far from over. And worse, Black and Brown Americans are disproportionately infected and killed by both COVID-19 and HIV.

Earlier this year, amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, released one of the first studies that brought to light the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on communities of color. We've been fighting to end racial disparities related to AIDS for over three decades.

Today, amfAR is asking you to join us in our mission to stop this injustice and save lives.

Lack of health insurance is one major factor putting Black and Brown Americans at increased risk of COVID-19 and HIV. It's also one our leaders can address immediately.

Sign the petition today to call on the Senate to enact legislation that better protects communities of color from COVID-19 and HIV.

Dear [Senator],

The two worst public health crises of our time, COVID-19 and HIV, both disproportionately impact communities of color in the United States. For example, while they account for just 13% of the U.S. population, African Americans accounted for 42% of new HIV infections in 2018, and they are 3.5 times more likely to die of COVID-19 than white Americans. Meanwhile, Latinx Americans are 4 times more likely to be hospitalized due to COVID-19 than non-Hispanic whites.

There are many factors fueling these unequal health outcomes. But there is one you can address immediately: Black and Latinx Americans are substantially less likely to have health insurance than white Americans.

This represents both a public health crisis and a racial injustice. I urge you to support the following actions to help improve this access and save lives today.

I'm calling on you to:

  • Eliminate out-of-pocket costs for all medical care related to COVID-19

  • Increase health care tax credits to lower health insurance premiums

  • Incentivize states that have not expanded Medicaid to do so by increasing the federal share of the cost

  • Call for a nationwide special enrollment period that would allow individuals and families without health care coverage, or individuals with short-term limited duration plans to enroll in an Affordable Care Act-compliant marketplace plan

  • Call to ensure that COVID-19 treatments and future vaccines are free for everyone and that a plan is developed to get the vaccine to communities of color hard hit by the virus
