Encourage Hybrid Car Ownership in California

In 2005, California extended carpool lane privileges to hybrid cars. The reasoning goes that, since carpool lane traffic moves along more quickly, the incentive would encourage commuters to purchase more fuel-efficient vehicles. And it worked -- demand for hybrid vehicles soared.
But the privilege is set to expire on July 1.
A new generation of even cleaner vehicles will get a similar privilege, but those cars don't even go on sale until early next year.
That's why we're calling on the California State Legislature to extend the program for another year.
Dear [Legislator],
I am writing to ask you to extend the hybrid vehicle carpool lane privileges for another year.

The program has been wildly successful at encouraging hybrid car ownership. While I appreciate that even cleaner cars will get the privilege soon, these cars do not even hit the market until early next year.
In the meantime, I respectfully ask that you extend the existing program.
Sincerely,
