Sharks have been roaming this earth for millions of years and in the past few years; their numbers have decreased by 90%. Their very existence is essential to the well being of not only the ocean ecosystem but also to us. These creatures who many people find dangerous and threatening are the ones who are at risk. Many species are headed for extinction and this is due to an increasing demand of shark fins. The largest demand for shark products is for shark fin soup.
Sharks are believed to be strong animals and since they have survived for so long, people have fallen under the misconception that shark cartilage can help cure cancer. This has not been scientifically proven. However, due to their high mercury levels, they are even considered to be dangerous for consumption.
Often, the sharks are captured and their fins are cut off when they are alive. Then, the sharks are thrown back into the ocean. If alive, they sink to the bottom, unable to swim, and become prey to other animals or they die soon of blood loss. This is a cruel act that countries practice and should not be permitted.
Most people who consume shark fins soup are not even aware that there is shark fins in them since the direct translation is fish wing soup. If people were aware of how barbaric this act is and how shark fin soup is made, then maybe it would lower the demand.
There are many things that you can do to save sharks, such as informing friends and family of what finning is and not eating at restaurants where shark fins is served. By taking small actions like these, we can all make a difference in the world.

We the undersigned believe and support the conservation of sharks. We believe that sharks should not be abused for their fins due to a growing demand in shark fin soup. Many people in the world who consume shark fin soup are not even aware of what is actually in the soup since its direct translation from chinese is fish wing soup. If people were more aware of what was in shark fin soup and how the soup was made, they might think twice before consuming it again.
We understand that many Asian restaurants have shark fin soup on their menus and that it is a delicacy. However, the largest demand for shark fins is for shark fin soup and this is leading to the decimation of the shark population. The fin itself is tasteless but people believe that it can help prevent cancer. On the contrary, its' high mercury levels could even pose a threat to consumers.
If each restaurant and store could stop the selling of shark fins, we would be saving the lives of many sharks who are necessary in keeping the balance of the oceans. The popluation of these creatures keep decreasing and by selling shark fins and shark fin soup, you are contributing to this decrease. There are many other items on a menu or in a store, so why not take out this one item and save the lives of many sharks.
