Drop Charges Against Couple For Saving a Baby Deer

When an Indiana couple discovered an injured baby white-tail deer, they couldn't bear the idea of the poor thing dying of its wounds. Jeff and Jennifer Counceller took the deer, named it Dani, in and nursed it back to health. The plan was to return it to the wild once it was on the mend.

But unfortunately, this act of kindness is actually against the law. Now, the Councellers have been charged with illegal possession of a whitetail deer and face a penalty of up to $500 and 60 days in jail.

The Department of Natural Resources claims that because of the animals' extensive contact with humans it needs to be killed. Thankfully, Dani turned up missing on the scheduled execution day, but her caretakers' battle has just begun. They have a March court date set.

The Councellers should not be jailed for an act of kindness, humanity and mercy. Tell Indiana Gov. Mike Pence to step in and ensure all charges are dropped.
Dear Governor Pence,

I heard you've been briefed on the situation of a Connersville couple who are facing jail time for taking in a dying fawn and nursing it back to health. This incredible act of kindness and humanity should not be punished. I ask that you use all tools at your disposal to ensure charges are dropped against Jeff and Jennifer Counceller.

[Your comments will be added here.]

The charge -- illegal possession of a whitetail deer -- stems from a law meant to target poachers. Clearly, the Councellers don't meet this description. Please act to keep these good samaritans out of jail.

Thank you for your time.
