This year, astounding heat broke records on every continent. Wildfires tore through Canada in June. In December, tornadoes ripped through parts of the United States for the first time in recorded history. And Australia is forecasted to experience even more record-setting heatwaves and floods in the coming months. Yet while extreme weather becomes the new normal, the Australian Parliament plans to allow the exploration for more oil and gas.
Sign now to demand the Australian Parliament deny these ecosystem-destroying permit applications immediately!
In May of 2021, the International Energy Agency told world governments that in order to limit global warming to 1.5C -- an already massively disruptive increase in global average temperatures- - exploration for new fossil fuel basins needed to stop by the year's end. If we want to meet the goals reached by the Paris Agreement, which Australia committed to, wealthy nations must stand up to the oil and gas industries.
On top of that, the marine ecosystem in question is home to at least 96 species who live there full time or migrate through. Nearly one in five species that call Rowley Shoals home is either threatened or endangered.
Australia's plans to expand renewable energy are wonderful, but will be rendered effectively meaningless if the country does not take action to stop fossil fuel exploration and extraction. Vibrant ecosystems will be disrupted by these seismic searches, and future oil and gas extraction will condemn the planet to certain catastrophic warming. Help us put pressure on the Australian government to deny the permit applications for oil and gas exploration near Rowley Shoals immediately! Sign the petition!
