Don't Play Politics: Sandy's Victims Need Help Now

The "fiscal cliff" dominated the news cycle and the congressional agenda in the last days of the 112th Congress, but it wasn't the only must-pass legislation. In December, the Senate passed a bill that would provide $60 billion in relief to the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Unfortunately, helping people whose homes and communities were washed away wasn't enough of a priority for House Republicans. The 112th Congress adjourned without passing the bill. Now, Congress has to start over from scratch, and victims must wait that much longer for desperately needed help.

House Speaker John Boehner has pledged to pass the relief bill in January -- but he and his fellow GOP leaders have already shown a cavalier willingness to put politics before the health and safety of victims. We must hold their feet to the fire to make sure Sandy's victims don't slip through the cracks again.

Tell Congress to swiftly fund relief and rebuilding efforts for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.
Dear [Decision Maker],

I was extremely disappointed that the 112th Congress closed up shop before the House of Representatives passed a relief bill to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy. It's crucial for the health, safety and recovery of these families and communities that the 113th Congress makes the passage of this bill a top priority in the first days and weeks of the session.

The Senate did the responsible and humane thing in supporting $60 billion in relief for victims. But House leaders put politics before the needs of millions in the Northeast by letting the bill die. Now representatives from both parties are up in arms. I trust that you and your colleagues will not do this again.

Please, make help for families in the northeast a priority.
