Information Access Saves Lives

On average, almost 250 million people are affected by natural disasters every year, and the numbers are rapidly rising. By 2015, an estimated 375 million people will be victims of hurricanes, floods, droughts and other disasters. During these crises accurate and timely information saves lives and reduces human suffering.

Independent, local media improves humanitarian relief communications and enables people in the midst of crisis to take an active role in their own survival and recovery. Humanitarian media not only helps victims understand what is happening, it also raises awareness about crises among people outside the affected area who can help.

Internews works with other humanitarian organizations on the ground and trains local journalists to ensure that local communities get the information they need during disasters. But it is also essential to keep funders, implementers and government officials informed and prepared to develop and nurture the humanitarian media.
Pledge to support Humanitarian media and learn more about the role Internews and local journalists play in saving lives in their communities.
