Don't Let London Police Cave to Corporate Interests
A recent report states that Richard Branson's Virgin company paid the London Metropolitan Police £5,060 after police raids aimed at proving television set-boxes were being used to view channels without paying.
The raids netted 5,000 boxes and £90,000 in cash, and in the aftermath of the raids, three men were jailed.
Police, however, likely only conducted the raids because of the money on offer from Virgin. According to London Assembly member Jenny Jones, when "police accept huge payments from wealthy companies to investigate crimes on their behalf, it means such paid work could take priority over murder, rape or child abuse cases."
Don't let corporate interests distort the police's priorities. Act now to tell the London Metropolitan Police not to accept extra payments from corporations.
We the undersigned urge you not to accept extra payments from corporations.
In light of the recent revelation that the Virgin company paid Metropolitan Police £5,060 after police conducted raids to prove television set-boxes were being used illegally, we are concerned that corporate interests are distorting police priorities.
We call on you not to let work paid for by corporations take precedence over more pressing issues, such as combating violent crimes.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
