Minnesota Needs Proposed Vermilion State Park Funding

A new state park has been proposed in MN and needs support for legislators to accept funding for the preservation of this undeveloped pristine land.  A 3,000 acre parcel of land has become available for acquisition by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources from US Steel, however if this funding package fails to be approved in the 2008 legislative session the land will be developed and the Vermilion State Park will never be a reality.  With more and more land being developed and degraded this is a great opprotunity to protect this beautiful area of natural Minnesota lakeshore.

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am writing this on behalf of the Help the Northwoods organization and the conscientious citizens in support of funding the proposed Vermilion State Park.

A 3,000 acre parcel of land has become available for acquisition by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources from US Steel, however if this funding package fails to be approved in the 2008 legislative session the land will be developed and the Vermilion State Park will never be a reality.

Minnesota%u2019s natural areas are increasingly threatened.  They are bought, developed, and many times degraded from their pristine natural conditions.  These natural areas are: besides being incredibly biologically important, also the essence of tourism and what people want to see when they come to Minnesota.  This park would embrace Minnesota%u2019s lakeshore heritage and make it a possibility for anyone to hike, camp, fish, etc%u2026 in their own pristine Minnesota lakeshore wilderness area.

Minnesota is known as the land of 10,000 lakes and draws a considerable portion of all tourism from its natural resources.  According to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Developments office of tourism state parks account for 25% of all tourism in Minnesota, and uphold our state heritage of beautiful natural areas.  Other major tourism activities include fishing, camping, and scenic touring, which would all be supplemented by Vermilion State Park.  This park would provide and protect an amazing lakeshore wilderness area while also boosting state and local economies.

I urge you to consider voting to approve funding of proposed Vermilion State Park, so there will be a Vermilion State Park.  This 2008 legislative session is the only chance this proposal has to become reality and secure what will soon be an icon of Minnesota natural heritage.

Sincerely,
