Let Alfonso stay to care for his family and his disabled daughter

Update: Please continue to sign the following petition in order to support Alfonso Chanco and his family. The great news is that Alfonso's stay has been extended until April 1st , 2019. We will continue to gather signatures to support the family in their struggle to stay together. We will send another update about who to thank. Please keep forwarding the petition to supportive friends, especially to constituents of Idaho's Senator Mike Crapo and Congressional Representative Mike Simpson.

This petition is calling on all of the warm-hearted and justice-minded members of our community and State to stand up for a family that has lived in the Wood River Valley for nearly two decades. We have a chance to stop the separation of a loving family living among us, so please let's do everything we can to help them.

Alfonso Chanco has a wife and four children, including a disabled daughter, Rubi, and he is currently ordered to be deported from the United States on October 1st, 2018, after 17 years of living and working here in Idaho.

While the deportation was ordered in 2012, Immigration & Customs Enforcement ("ICE") issued annual stays of his removal through 2017. This allowed him to live and work here legally, and to provide support to his wife and children.

According to Rubi's doctor, Alfonso is the only member of his family who can assist Rubi in completing all of her basic necessities of living and ensuring that she leads as full of a life as possible. Rubi's doctor has confirmed that Rubi must have Alfonso's help to lift and move Rubi from her wheelchair – no one else in the family can do this. He also assists her with hygiene needs, preparing her food, and transporting her. Rubi will need this assistance throughout her entire life, and the family will not be financially able to hire a full or part time caregiver for Rubi once Alfonso leaves the United States. Alfonso's hard work at two jobs also supports the rest of his family, and they will be left without sufficient financial support if he is forced to leave.

In June of 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court decided a case (Pereira v. Sessions) which held that immigrants who had been served incomplete Notices to Appear in immigration court may still be able to ask the immigration court to cancel their deportation orders based on extraordinary circumstances. Alfonso is one of the immigrants who was issued an incomplete Notice to Appear. Based on that case, Alfonso's lawyer filed an appeal of Alfonso's Motion to Reopen with the Board of Immigration Appeals on August 1st, 2018. A ruling on the appeal is not expected until sometime in 2019.

Unfortunately, even though Alfonso's case is on appeal, ICE refuses to extend his permission to stay in the United States past October 1st, 2018. This is despite the fact that Alfonso has a case pending that may decide in his favor, and despite the fact that he is the sole breadwinner for his family and the only person able to fully take care of the needs of his disabled daughter.

We call on Representative Mike Simpson and Senator Mike Crapo to please intervene in this case and allow a stay for Alfonso, and a reprieve for his wife and children from losing a father they love and depend on for their livelihood.

In addition to signing this petition, we ask that everyone please forward this to your friends.  We don't have much time left.  And please write and call Representative Simpson and Senator Mike Crapo.
